Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom Tooth Removal Post-Operative Instructions

After wisdom tooth removal, proper care is essential for optimal healing and to minimize discomfort. Follow these post-operative instructions provided by Oral Surgery + of Lake Charles:

Immediate Post-Operative Care

  1. Bite on Gauze: Immediately after surgery, gently bite down on the gauze pads placed over the extraction sites. Maintain pressure for at least 30 minutes to control bleeding.

  2. Avoid Disturbing Blood Clots: Do not rinse, spit, or use straws for the first 24 hours. Dislodging blood clots can lead to complications like dry socket.

  3. Pain Management: Take prescribed pain medications as directed. Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also help alleviate discomfort.

  4. Swelling Reduction: Apply ice packs to the outside of your face in 20-minute intervals during the first 24 hours. This helps reduce swelling and discomfort.

First 24 Hours

  1. Rest: Take it easy for the rest of the day after surgery. Avoid strenuous activities, bending, or heavy lifting.

  2. Diet: Stick to soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and soups. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard-to-chew foods.

  3. Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using straws and hot beverages.

After 24 Hours

  1. Oral Hygiene: Begin gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) 24 hours after surgery. Do this 3-4 times a day, especially after meals.

  2. Brushing: Resume brushing your teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction sites.

  3. Diet: Continue with soft foods for a few days, gradually transitioning to solid foods as tolerated.

  4. Pain Management: Use warm compresses on the outside of your face to ease swelling and discomfort.

Monitoring Your Recovery

  1. Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are normal and should gradually improve over the next week.

  2. Bleeding: Minor oozing is normal. If bleeding persists or is heavy, bite down on fresh gauze for 30 minutes. Contact our office if bleeding continues.

  3. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend all scheduled follow-up visits to monitor healing and address any concerns.

Potential Complications

  1. Dry Socket: Symptoms include severe pain and foul odor. Contact our office immediately if you suspect dry socket.

  2. Infection: Watch for increased pain, swelling, or discharge. Contact us if you notice these signs.

  3. Nerve Issues: Some numbness in the lips, tongue, or chin is normal and should resolve over time. Inform your surgeon if numbness persists.
