Multiple Extractions

Multiple Extractions Post-Operative Instructions

Undergoing multiple tooth extractions requires special care to ensure proper healing and minimize complications. At Oral Surgery + of Lake Charles, we provide comprehensive instructions to help you recover smoothly after your procedure.

Immediately After Surgery

  1. Bleeding Control

    • Bite on Gauze: Bite firmly on the gauze pads placed over the extraction sites for at least 30-45 minutes to control bleeding. Replace them with fresh gauze as needed.
    • Avoid Spitting and Rinsing: Do not spit, rinse, or use a straw for the first 24 hours to avoid dislodging the blood clots.

  2. Pain Management

    • Medications: Take prescribed pain relievers as directed. Over-the-counter pain medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can also be used.
    • Ice Packs: Apply ice packs to the outside of your face for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off during the first 24 hours to reduce swelling and discomfort.

First 24 Hours

  1. Rest

    • Take It Easy: Rest for the remainder of the day. Avoid strenuous activities, bending, or heavy lifting to minimize bleeding and swelling.

  2. Diet

    • Soft Foods: Stick to a soft diet for the first 24 hours. Suitable options include yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, and broths.
    • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid hot beverages and using a straw.

  3. Oral Hygiene

    • Avoid Brushing and Rinsing: Do not brush your teeth, rinse your mouth, or use mouthwash during the first 24 hours.
    • No Smoking: Refrain from smoking, as it can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.

After 24 Hours

  1. Oral Hygiene

    • Gentle Rinsing: Begin gentle rinsing with a saltwater solution (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water) after 24 hours. Do this 3-4 times a day, especially after meals.
    • Resume Brushing: Brush your teeth carefully, avoiding the extraction sites.

  2. Diet

    • Continue Soft Foods: Continue eating soft foods for a few days, gradually reintroducing solid foods as tolerated.
    • Avoid Irritants: Stay away from spicy, acidic, and hard-to-chew foods until fully healed.

  3. Pain and Swelling Management

    • Continue Medications: Continue taking prescribed pain medications as needed.
    • Switch to Warm Compresses: After 24 hours, you can use warm compresses to reduce swelling and discomfort.

Monitoring Your Recovery

  1. Swelling and Bruising

    • Normal Response: Swelling and bruising are normal and may peak 2-3 days after surgery. It should gradually improve over the next week.

  2. Bleeding

    • Minor Oozing: Some oozing is normal. If bleeding persists or is heavy, place fresh gauze over the area and bite down firmly for 30 minutes. If bleeding continues, contact our office.

    • Scheduled Visits: Attend all follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and to address any concerns.
    • Stitches: If you have stitches, they may dissolve on their own or need to be removed at a follow-up visit.
